A lot of people assume their consultation and their appointment are the same visit. They're not, and knowing the difference matters, because each one asks something different of you.
If you've already had your free consultation with Kareen at Integrated Ink, you know your candidacy, your design, and your pricing. What's left is preparing for the actual treatment session. If you haven't booked a consultation yet, this guide will still walk you through what to expect at every stage, so you can decide with confidence.
We've organized this into the Integrated Ink Pre-Appointment Protocol, the companion to our SMP aftercare guide. Together, the two resources cover your entire journey with us, from the day you start researching to the years after your final session.
Two Visits, Two Purposes: Consultation vs. Appointment

Your consultation and your appointment serve completely different purposes, and understanding that difference now will save you confusion later.
The consultation is free and comes with no obligation. This is where you and Kareen talk through your goals, your hair or scalp situation, and whether SMP is the right fit. You'll discuss hairline shape or density level, review before-and-after examples, and get transparent pricing. Nothing is decided for you. You leave with the information you need to make your own decision, on your own timeline.
The appointment is the treatment session itself, the day the actual pigment work happens. This is a separate, scheduled visit that only takes place once you've decided to move forward. Everything in the rest of this guide is about preparing for that visit.
If you've already had your consultation and booked your appointment, you can skip ahead to the Pre-Appointment Protocol below. If you're still deciding, keep reading, the next section covers candidacy.
Is Scalp Micropigmentation Right for You
Most people are good candidates for SMP. It works for hair thinning, receding hairlines, alopecia, and scar concealment, for both men and women, and it works across most skin tones and hair colours.
There are a few situations worth discussing openly with Kareen before booking. If you have active scalp psoriasis or eczema, or a flare-up at the time of treatment, it's best to wait until your skin has settled, since pigment doesn't take evenly on inflamed skin. If you're prone to keloid scarring, this is worth mentioning at your consultation so Kareen can assess your skin directly. If you take blood-thinning medication, this doesn't necessarily rule out SMP, but it's something to flag in advance so your appointment can be planned around it safely.
None of this is meant to discourage you, most people who ask about these situations are still excellent candidates once they're discussed properly. It's simply information Kareen needs in order to give you an honest answer, which is exactly what a good consultation is for.
The Integrated Ink Pre-Appointment Protocol

We break appointment preparation into four phases, from confirming you're ready to understanding exactly what happens the day of your session.
FOUR-PHASE OVERVIEW
1. Confirming You're Ready
2. In the Days Before Your Appointment
3. The Morning Of
4. What Happens During Your Appointment
Phase 1: Confirming You're Ready
Once your consultation is complete and you've decided to move forward, take a moment to confirm a few things before your appointment date locks in.
Review the before-and-after photos Kareen showed you, and don't hesitate to ask for a few more if it helps you feel confident in your decision. If you have any lingering questions about your hairline shape, density goal, or pricing, this is the time to ask them, not the morning of your appointment.
It's also worth confirming your appointment length and what session number you're on, since most clients need two to three sessions spaced roughly one to two weeks apart, and knowing this upfront sets the right expectation from the start.
Phase 2: In the Days Before Your Appointment
Good preparation starts several days out, not the morning of.
Starting about five to seven days before your appointment, moisturize your scalp once or twice daily with a fragrance-free, unscented cream or oil. Hydrated skin allows the pigment to absorb more evenly, and this single habit makes a real difference in how your first session turns out.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment. Alcohol thins the blood and can affect how cleanly the pigment sits in the skin. If you take a blood-thinning medication and haven't already discussed it with Kareen, do so before your appointment date.
For men receiving hairline or full-scalp SMP, shave to approximately 0.5mm the night before your appointment using clippers or a trimmer, not a razor blade on the day itself. For women receiving density SMP, no shaving is required, your hair stays exactly as it is.
Phase 3: The Morning Of
Eat a proper meal before you come in. A stable blood sugar level makes a genuine difference in comfort during the session, and there's no reason to arrive on an empty stomach.
Arrive with a clean, dry scalp and no products applied. Wear something comfortable that you don't mind sitting in for a few hours, and consider bringing a light layer, since studio temperatures can vary.
Bring any reference or inspiration photos you'd like to revisit, even if you already shared them at your consultation. Lighting and mood can shift how a photo reads, and having it on hand helps confirm the final design together.
If you tend to feel anxious in appointments like this, consider arranging a ride rather than driving yourself, it takes one thing off your plate on the day.
Phase 4: What Happens During Your Appointment
Knowing what the session actually looks like tends to ease most of the nerves that come with a first appointment.
You'll start with some brief paperwork, then Kareen will confirm your hairline shape or density design with you directly before any pigment work begins, using the plan from your consultation as the starting point. A topical numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable throughout. Sessions typically run two to five hours depending on the size of the treatment area.
Your first session will look lighter and less complete than your final result, this is intentional, not a sign anything went wrong. Most clients need two to three, and sometimes 4 sessions in total, each one adding depth and density, with your final look taking shape after the last one has fully healed.
Once your session wraps up, Kareen will walk you through your aftercare instructions in detail, and you'll find the complete version in our aftercare guide for reference at home.
A Note for Women: Preparing for Density SMP

Most pre-appointment guides are written for someone getting a shaved-head hairline treatment. If you're preparing for women's density SMP, your appointment looks different, and so does your preparation.
There's no shaving involved. Your hair stays at its natural length throughout, and the pigment is placed between existing follicles to build the appearance of density. Wash and style your hair as you normally would in the days before your appointment, there's no special scalp prep beyond the general moisturizing routine covered in Phase 2.
If you part your hair a certain way, mention this at your consultation or your appointment. Kareen can create a natural-looking part along the scalp that mimics your preferred parting style, so the density blends seamlessly with how you actually wear your hair. If you use topical treatments like minoxidil, mention this at your appointment if you haven't already, since it affects your aftercare timeline.
The appointment itself tends to feel less intense than clients expect. Because your existing hair stays in place, there's no dramatic before-and-after moment in the chair, the change reveals itself gradually as your sessions progress, which is exactly how it's designed to work.
What to Do Before Your Scalp Micropigmentation Appointment

A quick reference for the days leading up to your appointment.

- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment, since it can affect how cleanly the pigment settles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do before my scalp micropigmentation appointment?
Moisturize your scalp daily for 5 to 7 days beforehand, avoid alcohol for 24 hours before, eat a proper meal, and arrive with a clean scalp. Men receiving hairline SMP should shave the night before, not the morning of. Women receiving density SMP need no special scalp prep beyond regular moisturizing.
Does scalp micropigmentation hurt?
Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort rather than pain, similar to a light scratching feeling. A topical numbing cream is applied before your session to keep you comfortable throughout. Sensitivity varies from person to person, and Kareen checks in regularly during your appointment to make sure you're comfortable.
How long does a scalp micropigmentation appointment take?
Most sessions run two to five hours, depending on the size of the treatment area and whether you're receiving hairline, density, or scar concealment work. Your first session tends to run longer, since it includes design confirmation before any pigment work begins.
How many sessions does scalp micropigmentation require?
Most clients need two to four sessions, spaced roughly one to two weeks apart. Each session builds on the last, adding depth and density. Your final result is typically assessed 6 to 8 weeks after your last session, once everything has fully healed.
Can I eat before scalp micropigmentation?
Yes, and you should. Eating a proper meal beforehand stabilizes your blood sugar and genuinely improves comfort during your session. There's no reason to arrive on an empty stomach.
What is the difference between an SMP consultation and an SMP appointment?
Your consultation is a free, no-obligation conversation about candidacy, design, and pricing. Your appointment is the separate, scheduled treatment session where the actual pigment work happens. Most clients have one consultation, then two to three appointments.
Am I a good candidate for scalp micropigmentation?
Most people are. SMP works for hair thinning, receding hairlines, alopecia, and scar concealment, for both men and women. A few situations, like active skin flare-ups or keloid-prone skin, are worth discussing directly with Kareen at your consultation, but they don't automatically rule you out.
